Local Marketing 101: For Businesses New and Old

Often overlooked, ignored and deemed not important. Here are the main things, your business should consider before spending money on advertising in Vero Beach, Sebastian and Indian River County or the Treasure Coast.

We are operating under the assumption that your business has a website and a Facebook page already. Need help? We would like to preface this article with the fact that you get out of things what you put into them, if you think simply signing up gets the job done, you’re wrong. You have to engage, participate, and put in energy to get results with anything you do for your business.

First things first, if you do not have your Google Maps page setup, verified, profile configured and filled out 100%, drop everything and get this done. Need help?

Be sure to request reviews from family, friends, and colleagues.

Your Facebook page is great but remember the algorithm. Unless you are boosting posts or have a VERY engaging post roughly only 10% of your followers are seeing your post on average.

This makes Facebook groups and events very appealing for smaller marketing budgets. When you post to a group or event, everyone, within a reasonable login timeframe will see your posts. Creating an event and/or co-hosting an event is a great way to connect locally.

Infographic: 2017 State of Digital Marketing

Digital marketing is one of those areas that’s become, in a way, all-encompassing. There’s social media, there’s SEO, and there are the analytics that come with both. And with the rapid pace at which digital marketing evolves, it can be difficult and confusing to prioritize which parts deserve your attention.

That’s why the Search Engine Journal launched the 2017 State of Digital Marketing.

To find out where digital marketers focus their time and budgets, and how they set parameters of success, over 200 industry professionals were surveyed, filling roles within SEO, paid search, and content marketing.

Some of the most interesting findings were broken down into the handy infographic below. Among them were statistics on PPC spending — which ranges from $50 to $5,000 — and data showing that Facebook is still the preferred social media channel for 62% of marketers.

Facebook Non-Profit May 31st Update

Facebook announced it is making changes to help organizations like yours find new supporters and stay connected. They have developed a new Page template for nonprofits with buttons and tabs that they think will be successful for your page.

The template is designed to show your most important content and make it easier for people to take action, like create a fundraiser. The new template emphasizes tabs for photos, events and more. According to Facebook, there is nothing you need to do now. You’ll see this change applied on May 31. You can always choose another template and make more changes later in Settings.

Why do I share my most prized secrets? Because I want you to succeed. The DBPR website allows you to search and export businesses and gives you their address, phone number and EMAIL! Do it Now.


You can easily export a CSV file that can also be used in Excel for organizing however both Google and Facebook will import the default CSV file with field mapping / matching. This is a very simple process as described HERE. Searching by “License Type” and “City or County” is most effective.

This particular online service is only for the state of Florida however you can find similar for almost every state using Google Search. Don’t be afraid to try other similar searches with the state you are looking for etc.

It is illegal to send emails to lists like these as per CANSPAM. The CAN-SPAM Act, a law that sets the rules for commercial email, establishes requirements for commercial messages, gives recipients the right to have you stop emailing them, and spells out tough penalties for violations.

There is no such a law that prohibits serving display ads. Business license information is a public record.

Some of you may know I was visiting New Orleans this past week.

It was for business and pleasure. I went to the Lower 9th Ward, saw the levy, of course the French Quarter, mostly ate my favorite foods, created a new favorite, Shrimp Etoufee atop French Fries. While driving around a friend mentions using and enjoying Blue Apron, how if he invited me I would get a week of Free food. I gave him my email and he registered me. I got the email but after a few days of traveling that email was 50+ deep in my inbox. A few days later of course, I had forgotten about this car conversation completely.


Now I am back and checking my Facebook and BOOM. This article appears in my feed. I clicked it without hesitation, I never even saw “sponsored”. I was fixated on the Brand Name, the Headline and that colorful unique photo. I am a savvy digital media marketer and even I fell for this. Hook, Line and Sinker.

The cool thing is here is that with conversion tracking installed the ads will stop once I do finally signup. Remarketing is all around us every day at work, on our mobile and yes, even on vacation. You may be seeing these ads and think to yourself Blue Apron is a National brand, they must have big budgets, this type of advertising is out of my reach. It is not.

Ok, so you have been doing business for years, or maybe you haven’t been in business long but you have a list from DBPR or emails from your web site, MailChimp, Constant Contact, phone numbers from a conference or even your caller-id. Maybe you read my article “Growth Hacking Your Email Newsletter via Your WIFI Hotspot” and are using your WiFI to collect emails. Whatever the method, you know they are valuable but what do you do with them?

Cold Calling? Spamming? You know cold calling doesn’t work on you, why would it work when you try? You can’t spam for fear of going to jail due to CANSPAM laws. So what can you do? Definitely do not import this to MailChimp or Constant Contact.

You can serve Display Ads on…

#1 – Facebook

#2 – Google

Both Facebook and Google allow marketing to email lists and phone lists. Taking a list of emails and importing it into “audiences” or lists and then building an ad campaign to serve ads based on certain demographic information like geo-location or the city or county they are in, their gender, why serve ads for high heels to men right! You can also target by age group, no sense in selling a Bugatti to 18-24 year olds unless you want to target your ad to Justin Bieber.

All of these controls and more are available to you on both the Facebook and Google Platforms. Here is how you do it…






With that said there are some limitations. Google does not allow phone lists yet. Facebook allows both email and phone lists. Both Facebook and Google have other lists options that depending on your business may be worth exploring.

Serving these ads are typically very inexpensive however you will want to be sure to have the right advertising campaign and sales funnel for best results. Content marketing is key when marketing to lists and audiences. Check out this Really Great Example.
